Whitman’s “Whoever degrades another degrades me” provides another aspect to our usual discussions of attacking others through judgment, or ourselves through sickness. Rarely, if ever, do we think that if one person attacks another, it is also an attack on us. As an example, consider the contemporary political scene in this country—the right- and left-wing divisions. There are many right-wing talk show hosts who revel in humiliating and degrading people on the left. If you happen to be of the same political persuasion and enjoy listening to attacks on those you see as enemies, you are attacking the whole Sonship. Similarly, if you are on the left and enjoy people degrading and making fun of President Bush, you but do the same thing. It does not matter which side you are on. When you enjoy listening to someone attacking another whom you do not like, it is the same as if you attacked that person yourself, and thus you will not escape the hellish consequences of your guilt, as we read in The Song of Prayer:Hell cannot be asked for another, and escaped by him who asks for it. Only those who are in hell can ask for hell (S-1.III.2:5-6).

The only true fact in the illusion is that we are the same. This is not the oneness of Heaven’s undifferentiated spirit, which is unknown here. Yet while here, we can experience that truth’s reflection in recognizing that we are one in having the same split mind: the wrong-minded ego, the right-minded Holy Spirit, and the power to choose between them. Bodies, on the other hand, are different. When we seek to degrade or humiliate someone—seeing our sins in them—we deny this inherent sameness. For example, Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 911 is a funny and clever movie. Yet a good part of the movie’s humor comes at President Bush’s expense. It is one thing to disagree with someone’s policies, yet quite another to mock the person. Unfortunately, that was one source of the movie’s popularity, certainly among the left. In truth, however, it degraded one who is part of the Sonship, in whom the light of Christ shines just as it does in you, me, and Jesus. To say it is not present in this one person because you disagree with his policies, or think his I.Q. is not as high as a president’s should be, is to attack the entire Sonship. It is the universality of forgiveness that makes the practice of this course so very difficult. Making fun of someone—a not-so-subtle form of judgment—is never justified. You cannot judge without attack and without a prior belief we are separate from each other.

On the other hand, there is a scene in Moore’s movie that does not degrade anyone, though it makes a powerful statement regarding Congress passing the Patriot Act without reading it. In terms of its implications, this is a most significant bill. Congress passed it in the middle of the night, even though there was no way its members could have read it, given its size of 711 pages. Not even the staff that normally reads the bills and advises the Congressional membership would have had time to read it. In the movie, Moore rents an ice-cream truck with a speaker system and drives around Washington, in effect saying: “I am really trying to be helpful, guys. I know you didn’t have a chance to read the bill, so here is what it says.” Then he reads parts of it. He was not humiliating or attacking anyone, because he was not being personal, and his clever point was unmistakable. Similarly, Moore could have made his points about Bush without mocking him. Such motivation in making this movie is hardly kind and loving.

It is certainly important in a democracy that people express their concerns over what they believe is happening politically. Yet it is just as important that they be aware there are large groups of people who believe that what is going on is good. Similarly, many think A Course in Miracles is the work of the devil or the ego. We therefore need a perception that sees that all parties in a disagreement are one. Again, if George Bush is not part of the Sonship, if he is not weeping bitterly inside as is everyone else, no one is. By humiliating someone, whether a family member, boss, co-worker, or public official, we say that the Sonship is what the ego always maintained: a place of separation, judgment, and differences, and therefore a place of guilt. Above all it is the home of good guys and bad guys, of winners and losers, of those to be saved and those to be damned. We can therefore speak of two arches: the ego’s arch of illusion and judgment, and Jesus’ arch of reflected truth and forgiveness, to which we now turn.
